A shift from the physical to the mental. The Right Brain vs Left Brain test … you might have already seen this one, it is interesting.
Look closely, which direction is the dancer spinning?

Some will claim if you see her spinning clockwise, you use more of your right-brain than your left-brain, if you see her spinning counter-clockwise you use more of your left-brain than your right-brain. Others will claim this is just an optical illusion.
LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic, detail oriented, facts rule, words and language, present and pastmath and science, can comprehend, knowing, acknowledges order/pattern perception knows object name, reality based, forms strategies, practical, safe
RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling, “big picture” oriented, imagination rules, symbols and images
present and future, philosophy & religion, can “get it” (i.e. meaning)
believes, appreciates, spatial perception, knows object function
fantasy based, presents possibilities, impetuous, risk taking
- -
By looking around the image, focusing on the shadow or some other part, you may force your visual system to reconstruct the image and it may choose the opposite direction, and suddenly the image will spin in the opposite direction.
Do you see the dancer turning clockwise or counter-clockwise? Can you control the direction?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackAm I nuts that I can only see it going one way? I don’t get the illusion…
@Laura, I see it going clockwise…if I stare long enough I can see it going counter-clockwise…kinda weird.
-Mark
I love this one.
I can see both. It takes some concentration and mis-direction.
But a fun thing to see.
@Strong One, Yes…concentration is the key.
-Mark
Hmm. I need to concentrate harder I guess. I’m a counter-clockwise girl myself.
@Fit Bottomed Girls , That’s cool though!
-Mark
Argh! I can usually force myself quite easily to see all perspectives of an optical illusion, but I am struggling with this one.
I’m only seeing her spin clock-wise. I’m not giving up though… back at it. It’s a challenge now!
Cool post, Mark
It keeps changing from one direction to the other
———————————
@suzanne, it is interesting, isn’t it?
-Mark
I got it!!! I had to focus on the upper right corner – away from the actual silhouette. i could see my vision shifting. The dance became quite choppy, then it clicked. With a blink, she was clockwise again. Amazing…
—————————————-
@Joe Girl, Very cool! You are right and left!
-Mark
At first it was going counter-clockwise…then I stared and she started going clockwise. Weird!!!
Anna @ Shoe Smitten, it is weird!
-Mark
I mostly see her moving clockwise. If I focus and concentrate I can change it to counter clockwise. My husband primarily sees counter clockwise.
————————————–
@Gena, Very cool!
-Mark
This is so fascinating! I am stubborn but I think the more stubbornly I stare at it, the more left-brainy I become and unable to see the other way.
I was actually just reading something related about how sprinters can gain an advantage off the blocks depending on what side of the brain they use. If you’re interested, the link is http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/10/AR2008081001792.html?nav=rss_print/asection.
@tfh, Thanks for the link!
-Mark
wow, that is weird! I can only see it going counter-clockwise—are you guys telling the truth when you say you can see it both directions?
(that must be my practical left side brain talking)
@workout mommy, stare at it long enough..yes!
-Mark
Try as I might…I can only make her go clockwise…this is weird! And interesting!
@Lance, Sometimes it takes a bit…
-Mark
Okay, i stared and stared and only saw it moving to the right (clockwise), but my daughter saw it moving counterclockwise, very interesting:)
@Dr.Daisy, Very interesting indeed…thanks!
-Mark
OK. Staring and staring. I can only see her going counter-clockwise!
———————-
@felicepd, most see clockwise, that’s interesting!
-Mark
I’m a dedicate right-brainer but I am going to test some of the other recommendations for seeing the dancer go the other way.
———————–
@POD, Sounds good!
-Mark
I see it both ways. I’ll see it one way , look away and look back and it’s going in the other direction. Maybe I’m just all messed up.
————————-
@Big Girl, Actually that is pretty neat!
-Mark
It is going clockwise for me
I am totally in the right brain category! Fun stuff
———————-
@Annette, It is fun!
-Mark
Haha, I saw it both ways, too! I literally scrolled down to finish reading, then scrolled back up and she had changed directions. I think I definitely use both sides, depending on what the subject matter is
——————————
@Jenn, Very cool!
-Mark
This is cool! I can see it both ways without trying. Thank Goodness I use both sides of my brain, good to know, seriously.
—————————-
@Rosy, Very good!
-Mark
I’ve seen this before, and she ALWAYS spins CL for me. A bit strange because I’m an engineer and tend to be very analytical.
@cathy, at first glance it is CL for me as well.
-Mark
clockwise is all I see – very interesting
———————–
@FatFighter, Thanks for you input!
-Mark
At first she was spinning counter-clockwise. I looked away for 10 seconds, then looked at her again and she was then spinning clockwise. Weird!!!
—————————–
@Live Well, It weirded me out as well!
-Mark
I think I’m getting motion sick! After looking for longer than you might imagine, I still only see clockwise. I asked my very left brained son and he said clockwise (blew that theory). Then I began to wonder if it was really only clockwise, when my other son which direction and he could see it both ways. My older daughter could see it both ways too. I’ll keep trying. Will be interesting to see what my very left brained husband and younger daughter have to say.
Ugh!! Thanks for the madness.
———————————–
@Cheryl Smith, You have to find something to drive you crazy!
-Mark
That’s so weird that people see her spinning in different directions! She is SOOOOO obviously spinning clockwise!
————————-
@Zandria, Ha!
-Mark
I can see both with ease, but then again, I am TRULY directionally dyslexic. I always have to pause to figure out left from right (and this after marching band and military training), and don’t even ask me to determine east/west/north/south (and this after fixed-wing pilot training).
Don’t know what that says about my brain…further study may be required!
——————————
@Liz Page, A wide variety definitely! Thanks for checking it out!
-Mark
I’ve always loved this! I’m a clock-wise person, but rarely can see it spin counter-clockwise. Very interesting!
@Surrealistique, It is interesting…thanks!
-Mark
I used this in a class once, and people were fascinated by it. They kept asking for me to put it up again during our breaks! LOL
I see both, but it requires a long blink or looking away. Telling her to switch directions doesn’t work so well.
——————————
@Cammy. You mean she doesn’t listen?
-Mark
If I look away I can totally control her. Does this mean I’m a controlling person? ha ha I have never seen this before, it’s really cool!
———————————-
@Audra Krell, Interesting
-Mark
Ok, this is crazy! At first I could only see it going counter-clockwise, which I thought was weird because being left-handed, I always thought of myself as right brained. Then just as I was about to give up, I looked at it again and it started turning clockwise! So…either my brain is playing games or this is just weird!
—————————————–
@Suzanne, It is weird indeed!
-Mark
It was clockwise for me, then I told her to change directions and she did
@Gabrielle, Very good!
-Mark
HOLY CRAP Gabrielle, me too! She was spinning clockwise and then I told her go left and she DID! That is just the coolest!
———————————-
@Fitarella, Mind control! Very cool!
-Mark
I first saw her go clockwise. When I blinked, she went counter-clockwise. Thanks Mark for helping me prove I’m in my “right mind” after all! LOL! Have a great week
————————————-
@DaDivaStreet, Very nice…good job!
-Mark
Weird.
I can see her going in both directions if I close my eyes and look at a different part of the picture. Soo odd.
—————————————-
@Losing Irene, It is a bit weird!
-Mark
Right brain!
@blogversary, Nice!
This always frustrates me because I see her going back and forth, not spinning. I can force myself to see her spinning in both directions but at first I just see her swinging her leg back and forth. Maybe this means I only think with my Occipital lobe or something. lol
Jenn
—————————
@Jenn, or a gift maybe?
-Mark
I can control the direction but for me the more natural way I see it is spinning clockwise (and I’m definitely more of a right brain person than a left brain person). This is really neat!
——————————————-
@Sagan, That is very cool if you can control it!
-Mark
Nope, she keeps going clockwise…
——————–
@Alice, she does the clockwise thing for me at first..usually.
-Mark
Ive seen this a bunch and every single time it amazes me!!!!
I cant control her at all.
@Mizfit, hmmm
-Mark
Well, at first I was disheartened because I was seeing clockwise, and I’m a total left-brainer. So I challenged myself to see it the other way, and I couldn’t. I chalked it up to having some mad spatial skillz (which is right-brain). But then I read a few comments and scrolled back up (like Jenn- eating bender) and I could totally see it Counter-Clockwise. After a while I could control which way I saw it.
So weird (and kind of creepy). I was also a little distracted by the fact that she seems to have no clothes on- what’s up with that? Woman, have some dignity!
Thanks for the fun post. = )
—————————————-
@RooBabs, It is kinda weird and good point put some clothes on!
-Mark
She is going counterclock for me! Must be a left-brainer…Would explain a few things.
@Souad , Maybe..
-Mark
Cool brain tricks! I initially couldn’t see anyway but clockwise. I focused on the foot and then I saw the shift in the other direction. Now I can’t see the CL way again!
@Keyalus, Cool stuff!
-Mark
Update! This was driving me bonkers, so I spent my whole day mastering my brain and it finally switched. Today it’s much easier. Good trick is to scroll down so you can just see her foot going back and forth and imagine her going the direction you want.
I have to rest now.
———————————-
@Fit Bottomed Girls, Good tip! Thanks!
-Mark
I can make it change at will! Does that make me super brained?
————————-
@Mamasphere, Definitely!
-Mark
Sucks…the image won’t load for me. Will have to check it out from another computer. Will have to know what brain I’m in until then
—————————
@DC Watts, Try it later! Thanks!
-Mark
Neat trick! It seemed to work for me-I saw it spinning counter clock wise and I agree with the characteristics given for me!
———————
@Tipper, Thanks for your comments!
-Mark
I am definitely right brained! I can’t imagine being able to see the dancer spinning counterclockwise, and I can’t seem to make myself see it that way!
————————————
@The Baroness, It can be challenging!
-Mark
I saw her turn both ways, first clock wise then anti clock wise. Does that mean I’m confused? Probably….
Cool post Mark, thanks!
@christinekambo, Not confused…just smart!
-Mark
At first it seemed she was spinning clockwise. I looked away, and then when I looked again it appeared she was spinning counter-clockwise.
Weird.
Interesting…I can only see it going clockwise so far, but apparently my daughter sees it going counter clockwise. Fascinating stuff.
I saw her spinning counter-clockwise at first, but I was able to easily switch and see her go clockwise. Interesting!
—————————–
@Erin, Interesting indeed!
-Mark
This seriously makes my head hurt!!!
First she was going to the left…then she was going to the right!
What does that mean?
I AM THE SMARTEST WOMAN IN THE UNIVERSE.
Oh yeah!!!
p.s. Congrats on being #1 in POW!
@McMommy, Yes it does…or pretty darn close
POW!
-Mark
OMG, get me some more coffee! I think I am dilusional. She’s doing the worm and the Rogr Rabbit
@Tyne, Ha! Wow that is a first…very cool!
-Mark
At first I saw it spinning clockwise, but it did turn. Very interesting. I’ve always known I was in my Right brain though
.
@Monica, I find it interesting as well! Thanks!
-Mark
Very cool post. I saw her spinning counter clockwise so a lefty I am!
—————————
@Karen, cool!
-Mark
I saw both. At first glance I saw it move counter clockwise and after a few seconds I could see clockwise. After about a thirty seconds it went back to counter clockwise.
I suppose these means I am very balanced.
—————————————-
@Sunsus, Very interesting.

I can switch directions as I choose.. clockwise is dominant. however if i look away and look back with the intention of switching it works and starts spinning counter clockwise
How does it work?
Who made it?
I can make her change directions quite easily. Always starts turning clockwise however when I first look the picture. I am left handed by the way. I also have problems with directionality. Marching band was quite the challenge for me back in the day.
