Something just for fun, maybe a bit well..uneasy for some. The site Very Good Taste posted a list of 100 things that they felt every good omnivore should try at least once in his or her life. I was introduced to the list by Cathy at A Life Less Sweet.
My list of the foods I have tried are in bold and a few that I won’t try are crossed out! Blank I have not tried. I have also included a few comments.
Not quite sure what the criteria was for the list.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI think about a third of these I have tried. But some of these I think I will also forgo. I am just can’t see myself eating snake or crocodile.
@Talli van Sunder, DPT, I agree…some of these, well…no thanks!
-Mark
Don’t knock Poutine man… it’s awesome.
I’d try just about anything on that list apart from roadkill and the cigar.
———————-
@Christine, Poutine does look dangerous!
-Mark
Haha, I love this list! I might have to do this one on my blog, if you don’t mind. It’s so fun!
@eatingbender, Have fun!
-Mark
I’m definitely posting this, you won’t believe how many i’ve actually had!! Thanks guess i’m a foodie
@suzanne, can’t wait to see it!
-Mark
Oooh…interesting!
I’ve never heard of some of those foods. But, I have tried many on the list. If nothing else, t does make you think about the amount of diversity (or not!) in your diet.
—————————————–
@felicepd, it certainly does!
-Mark
“Sweetbreads – The name is deceiving…no thanks!”
Ha. It IS deceiving.
I tried frog legs. It tastes like chicken.
—————————-
@Vered, it sure is!
-Mark
You wouldn’t try catfish? Get thee to a soul food restaurant one day and enjoy LOL! I think their whole bottomfeeder status is what makes it so fatty/tasty! Coming off a Top Chef jag I was eager to try sweetbreads upon dining at Richard Blais restaurant here in Atlanta. I was thinking it was something donut like. I passed on that one once I found out what it was LOL.
No catfish? Seriously?
Yeah, I have to echo the catfish sentiment. We had some delish farm-raised Mississippi catfish just last night. Not what you would eat for omega-3s, but so mild and tasty!
I’ve never tried croc but I’ve had alligator and it actually tastes GOOD! Like chicken! LOL
neat idea
I may do this on my blog this week when I have more sleep
@keyalus
@Mama Zen
@cathy
Ok I give in…how about a recipe?
I’m surprised you haven’t tried spam. I think that must be an age thing. It was a staple in the 60s.
@Sherre, I live in MN and I believe Spam is made in the state? Every person in the state grew up on Spam except me!
Do I dare try it?
I will defintely do this on my blog…
No bagel and lox??? OY!
Rootbeer float and S’mores……no problem
Most everything else….uh…probably not, I’m seriously not adventurous with eating…thankfully i like fruits and veggies
————————————-
@Juicebox.mom, You gotta love fruits and veggies!
-Mark
I am such a picky eater. I was saying “ewwww” at a lot of on the list.
Snails in butter and garlic, yuuummmmmmy! it’s one of my favorite things…steak tartare is wonderful, so is dulce de leche (especially the Hagaan Daz ice cream version) oh you don’t know what you are missing!
—————————–
@Suzanne, So I have been told
-Mark
Oh goodness, I must be so boring! There are many, many things on the list that I hope I’m never forced to try!
@Audra Krell, We all have our own preferences….not boring!
#27 dulce de leche…love that stuff. I lived in Argentina for a couple of years -man that stuff is good. I haven’t had it for a while though…
@Blake, You lived in Argentina? Very cool!
-Mark
Wow.. I need to get out more. LOL
Mark, this list is awesome! I’m so going to have to do this on my blog too. I’ll come right out and say I’ve had just about everything on this list…and there are things missing, like scrapple. Mmmmm, scrapple…
Oh my! This is a super questionaire!
I would! life is too short to turn my nose up at something I mightcould love!
I’m a Canadian, and Mark – you have to let go of your aversion to fat, cheesy goodness and just TRY Poutine. Just once. For me. Go ahead. Chip Wagon Fries, melted Mozzarella and gravy. Oooooohhhhh the gravy.
Go for it!!!
(might explain my extra 15lbs!)
———————————-
@Joe Girl, Canadian? Hmmm….
-Mark
I’m with you on the frog legs! How much meat could you get off those legs anyway?
yikes! that’s a looong list! Some of the foods in that list, I don’t even recognize
Anyway, just dropping in to say thank you for the wonderful words. I do appreciate them.
oopsy, I’m gonna add you to my blog list. Hope that’s A-Ok
————————————
@Maricris, Of course! Thanks!
-Mark
steak tartar?! Yikes! I don’t blame you for crossing that off
I love this idea. I’ve never seen this done before. I was surprised to see how much I’ve actually tried. Now oysters……I tried once, and never again.
————————–
@Momisodes, Finally somebody agrees with me!
-Mark
Ill try anything. Ive even eaten dog once by mistake in Egypt
@Suzie, You are adventurous!
-Mark
I’m shocked to see how many things on the list I’ve already tried but there are a few that would be on the NEVER list for me, like horse
anything made from entrails, brain or other “parts” I’ve never had croc but I’ve had gator, close enough for me.
Polenta is worth it. Don’t know about all those others.
o0o0o0o, I am stealing this list/idea. I am such an adventurous eater that if given the opportunity, I may consume 99% of this list. Another to-do list/goals list to keep! Yea!
sweets&sweats.wordpress.com
@Fitzalan, I look forward to yours!
-Mark
Dude, I can’t believe you aren’t even going to try oyster.
Never heard of Sweetbread…
I had Gator once when I first moved to Florida!
Not worth eating. I also had a taste of a friends order: Lion meat. It must have been from a very old, tough lion, as no sauce in the world could make it eat worthy! I make better choices now, being mostly vegan
It’s a process.
——————————
@Dr. J, Wow! adventurous…thanks for sharing!
-Mark
Chicken tikka masala is great! Anything curried including goat. Snails aren’t bad if you hold your nose and swallow whole and that is exactly how I would eat an oyster.
Oh what a cool post. Especially because in scanning it, there are a few items I’ve never heard of. I’ll definitely be checking this one out for another post soon.
Thanks for the comment too

@Manuela, Thank you!
-Mark
Poutine is a dangerous concoction made by the Canadians to block your arteries
It is good and evil…I am not a big adventurous eater…but I have tried quite a few things from the list. I like ethnic food…that helps.

Neat idea! You like the spicy stuff-my husband does too-but not me-I’m a wimp when it comes to spicy.

That’s quite a list. I am such a picky eater I think there’s maybe only a handful of things on that list I’ve actually eaten and the rest I wouldn’t try. My parents used to call me Plain Jane.
Whole insects??? What is this, like Survivor or something? NO thanks.
Now Dulce de Leche, that’s a whole different story. YUM! : )
Cool list!
@Elaine, Ha! Seems kind of like Survivor…doesn’t it?
-Mark
How interesting! some of those things are so common where we live I know you must be from a different part of the country!
Poutaine isn’t so bad if you make it yourself. Real fresh cheese curds (yum, I could eat them all by themselves!) and country gravy over fries.
You don’t know what you’re missing… never had fresh berries???
And Pho is amazing! Seattle’s the best place for it!
@Krista, Sometimes I wonder if I am from a different planet!
Thanks for your comments.
