I hope that everybody has enjoyed the season thus far. I have been on a hectic pace that has kept me away. I
am working my way back into the blogosphere as time allows. This post was inspired by Chris Brogan’s – 12 Things to Stop Doing in 2009. I added a few twists of my own.
10 Things to Stop Doing in 2009
1. Stop making excuses for not doing things to move forward along your journey.
2. Stop striving for perfection, and strive for execution instead.
3. Stop putting yourself down.
4. Stop waiting for something to come that will make everything better (if only).
5. Stop thinking you can read minds.
6. Stop trying to do it all yourself.
7. Stop trying old things in new places, unless they’re really old.
8.Stop beating yourself up when you don’t create something on a given day.
9. Stop presuming everything will get better because someone else will fix it.
10.Stop neglecting to do something for YOU.
Here’s the deal:
It’s very challenging to ignore something if you are intentionally trying to. Isn’t it? That is how the mind works. So as Chris Brogan puts it, maybe we should try to focus on 6 things in the to do list.
6 Things to Do in 2009
1. Find a new way to improve someone’s day (and determine if there’s value in it).
2. Take on more activity (maybe an extra walk or bike ride each week- keep a journal).
3. Promote the great people out there ( and and keep doing it).
4. Learn from brilliant people (and share what you learn).
5. Discover your passions (and share them openly)
6. Continue to move forward along your journey!
Makes sense to me! Let’s start our 2009 out strong! How about you, anything to add?
Every waterfall starts with a drop!

Welcome back! Hope your vacation was wonderful. Missed reading your site. This one is filled with great suggestions, no surprise there
@ Dr. J, Thanks! Hope your holidays have been awesome!
Hi Mark!
I’m happy to see you’re back!
#’s 2, 3, 5 & 6 are doozies for me….
#3 is my worst. I can’t stop comparing myself to other women. I always fall short. It’s a crippling way to be. I don’t know how to stop.
I’m alone because of it. I wish I was kidding.
If I could accomplish one thing, more than even losing my excess weight it would be that. Because even if I do lose all my weight, if I keep thinking like that I’ll be in trouble.
Anyway, sorry to dump here, but it really hit a nerve, I guess.
~~ HAPPY NEW YEAR, MARK ~~
A refreshing way to look at the new year. Thank you!
@Katschi, We all could work on that one. I always appreciate your feedback. You are doing great! happy New Year!
@Tigerlilly, thank you!
Great ideas to ponder on! Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year my friend!
Amen to #2 and #3 on the STOP list!
One of my best gifts in 2008 was discovering you and your blog Mark! I look forward to another good year my healthy living comrade!
Excellent advice Mark! I would add “stop putting your dreams off until someday” and “do something to celebrate life everyday, even if it’s just arranging some flowers in a vase”. Have a great 2009 Mark!
@Maricris, Happy New Year to you my friend!
@Stephanie Quilao, Same here! Happy New Year!
@Marelisa, Fantastic add! Happy New Year to you as well!
Wow. So right on. For me, #6 is the one I really need to work on. Really.
One thing I’ve tried to stop doing is complain. I think you can go through life cataloging complaints, or you can DO something (including changing your attitude). I’m trying to DO something rather than complain! Since I actively started to think this way, things have been better and areas that needed improvement in my life have started to improve! It’s like without the complaints, I had clearer vision. Or something like that!
Happy new year!
Love the list. My worst is number 3 on the what not to do…and it impacts several things in my life.
I hope you don’t mind, but I linked this post on my blog. I think it’s something everyone needs to keep in mind!
Have a safe and happy new years eve and new year!
I’ll join “stop striving for perfection.”
Happy New Year, Mark.
I really appreciate this list because I’m guilty of so many mentioned….a list to inspire action in the new year!

Excellent suggestions! Also, just wanted to let you know I am back to blogging, and doing some crazy fitness stuff. So drop on by my blog sometime.
Love this! My addition: act with confidence.
Great to do list! Our good Governor of Utah would ask his kids every night before going to bed, “What did you do today to make someone else’s life better.” I love that and hope to instill in my kids the same idea.
Both of these lists are great! I particularly like strive for execution, rather than perfection.
@John K, Welcome back!
@Sagan, Great addition!
@Super Healthy kids, What a cool Governor!
@Mama Zen, I like that one as well!
Happy New Year Mark!

Hey there, Mark! Been missing your posts!
Great list – LOVE it.
Here’s to a fabulous 2009!
I have to admit I struggle with this one:
2. Stop striving for perfection, and strive for execution instead.
I am getting better, but for some silly reason, I think I have to do it perfectly the first time out of the gate. Now I try to focus on the execution. Thanks for that reminder.
Wishing you a fantastic 2009, Mark!
Glad to see you back and writing. This is a valuable post. Loved #2 same as Urban panther suggested. Strive for execution.
Here’s to a fantastic new year~!
@Karen,Thanks!
@Dr.Hubbard,I agree! Happy New Year!
@FatFighter, Happy New Year to you!
@UrbanPanther, I think we set ourselves up for disappointment if we try to be perfect. We are only human.
Happy New Year!
@POD, A challenge indeed…to a fantastic 2009!
Happy New Year! Great lists as always.
Excellent lists. My focus “to-do” for 2009 (another big change year for me) is to keep looking and moving forward.
Happy New Year!
Great lists, Mark! I think that I might steal them for my life.
Happy New Year! Looking forward to all you have to offer this year!
Happy NY MARK!!! Love all of the advice!
@Blake, Thanks Blake!
@cammy, Great idea!
@cathy, Thanks Cathy to a fantastic 2009!
@bobbi, Happy New Year to you!
Welcome back Mark! And, a very happy new year to you and your family!
Great list of things to do going forward, thanks for sharing!
This is motivating and inspiring! I need to stop being negative once things are not as I expect them to be. A new year, a new beginning and lets learn from our past lessons so that we can handle situations much much better.
My new blog is a result of #5. Oh, health is still my passion, but for 2009, I’m branching out, and advancing my walking into biking, pictures and more.
I’m definitely putting all of your stops into action this year.
Thanks for the inspiration.
Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.
There’s nothing to it, but to do it.
No more excuses.
Excuses are only good for one thing… the energy used to release them.
Have a great new year my friend.
I have bestowed an award upon your blog. Come to mine, and see.
Happy New Year! This is a great post to start the New Year of right. I really enjoyed reading the 6 things you should do this year. Very motivating!
@Lance,Thank you! Happy New Year!
@Rosabel, I agree!
@LisaNewton, I will have to check out your new blog!
@Gina, Yes to breathe is good!
@Strong One, Happy New Year to u!
@Holly, I am on my way! Thanks!
@Talli, Happy New Year!
Such a kick A list!! Love, love, love it
I think the first thing I need to work on is number three. This is a really great list.
1) Stop making excuses for not doing things is something everyone should take on board. I would make a lot more progress in multiple areas if I stopped looking for reasons why I couldn’t do something.
@marcy, thanks!
@Carla, A great start! Thanks for your comment!
@Tom Parker, Great point! We all could work on that one!
Happy New Year! Great tips ~
Wow Mark this one got a lot of comments. No wonder, it’s a fantastic list! Keep up the great work.
