Most of us w
ould prefer a fast metabolism. Of course when we exercise, our bodies require more energy and our metabolism increases in order to supply it. However, most of the time we are not all that active and in my opinion we want to improve the caloric burn when doing very little, like sitting around or even sleeping. Remember a slower metabolism means more of those calories you take in are going to be sitting around waiting to become extra pounds. *Various studies have shown that certain “foods” can assist in the metabolism boost.
**Maybe we should include some foods that speed up the metabolism naturally:
Coffee – A quick boost, consider adding a little extra caffeine to your diet. A cup will give it a quick kick into high gear that can be helpful during the day.
Green Tea -Most will say this is a healthier alternative to coffee. Chemicals known as catechins found in gre
en tea are believed to stimulate your metabolism.
Citrus Fruits – Researchers say that foods rich in Vitamin C, such as oranges, tangerines and grapefruit contain natural metabolism boosting properties that also make your immune system stronger.
Hot Peppers- Capsaicin is the ingredient in peppers that gives them their heat. Research shows that this compound actually stimulates your body’s production of adrenaline which kicks your metabolism into high gear temporarily. Throwing some jalapenos at your sandwich or some hot
peppers in your scrambled eggs could help you burn more calories.
Dark Green Vegetables – High in fiber with high levels of vitamins and nutrients our bodies need to be healthy. Spinach, mustard greens and collard greens are good examples
Spices – Cumin, Ginger and cinnamon are all good examples. Adding a decent amount of these spices into your
meals can give them more flavor and can help increase your metabolism.
Lean Protein – Protein is harder for the body to digest than carbohydrates, and because it requires more energy the result is more calories. By including lean protein in your meal, you’ll be giving your metabolism a boost when you eat. Try to include chicken or turkey breasts and fish.
Whole Grains - Fiber isn’t as easy for the body to digest. It takes more energy resulting in fewer calories available to be converted into fat cells.
So I guess the idea is to stay active and make wise food choices! ? Oh yes of course…
Water- Drink your water! It helps the body flush out excess sodium and toxins. A German study showed that drinking
water helped boost the metabolism by 30 percent. Drinking enough water to stay well hydrated also helps to keep you from mistaking thirst for hunger, and can prevent unnecessary calorie consumption and binging.
What do you think, any additions?

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackGreat list! Am crazy about cinnamon
I’d just add that eating frequent small meals throughout the day and keeping moving throughout the day also helps to accelerate the metabolism.
Nice post, Mark! I’m not a fan of green tea. I don’t like the taste at all.
BTW, I’m learning different ways to cook egg whites, still not a huge fan either.
Great list! This will make me think about how a food will affect my metabolism before I eat it now.
Nice post, well done! I just had a grapefruit for breakfast and I am planning on making some tea soon!
An excellent and informative article!
I love coffee but it’s a bust for me. The hubby won’t let me drink it because I whine about the caffeine withdraw headaches. Maybe I’ll get bold and try some hot peppers this weekend.

Great list! Maybe ginger is good also. For those that want some green tea but don’t like the traditional way, consider tossing a teabag into anything you are making in boiling water, ie rice or pasta.
Hi Sagan! Keep moving and yes that cinnamon!
Hi Rosy! Do you like coffee?
Hi Cathy! Nice to keep the engine burning!

Hi Mark: I love the idea of being able to speed up your metabolism based on the foods you eat. Hot peppers here I come
Great post. I know hot peppers are good for you, but I’m kind of a wimp. Anyway I try to get some in on occasion.
I didn’t know that about water!
Hi Lisa! You are definitely on the right track!
Hi Marelisa!Go peppers!
Hi Dr. Hubbard! Thanks for your feedback!
Hi Mama Zen! Yes drink your water!
Is it healthy to try to change your metabolism? I think it is.
glad you are BACK!!
and you know me and my coffee
one cup in the am is nonnegotiable.
this is great mark! thanks!
The peppers remind me of a dish I made for my DH and his brother. I love peppers so I made smoked, stuffed peppers for them. I was eating mine and thinking how wonderful they were, just not hot enough and I looked over at them. Their eyes were rolled back in their heads and they were drinking big gulps of water. Now you and I know you don’t drink water with peppers. I got them some milk and they calmed down but I never saw such wimps in my life. I guess I just tolerate “hot” better than they do. LOL
Hi Dana! I appreciate your feedback!
Hi Miz! I am with you on the coffee!
Hi Rupal! Thank you!
Hi eve! Ha! Very funny…if one is familiar with peppers they avoid water, if not well…
Nice post! I am trying to cut down on my cafeine intake, but maybe getting reaquanted with green tea could work! Forgot about that one.
love the list, I knew I had a good excuse for eating Thai food:)
Prevention recently had a blurb suggesting that green tea was effective in helping to burn off belly fat.
Also, since completing my 5K, I’m happy to say that I continue to exercise four times a week, but the weight still isn’t coming off, so now I’m contemplating going to Jenny Craig because I’m so frustrated.
Love the list and pretty much everything on it, especially hot peppers! You’d think I’d be a burning machine, but somehow I don’t think I should stop exercising. Ha, ha!
I hadn’t heard about spices creating a metabolic boost! Thanks Mark!
All of the items you listed are foods I eat regularly-except the hot peppers-I leave them for my husband!
How about a whole wheat tortilla, smothered with spicy salsa and turkey (tofurkey for me), a squeeze of lime, wash it down with water and green tea? Would that work?
peace,
mike

Hi Diana!Green tea is a fantastic choice!
Hi bobbi! Yum Thai food!
Hi Suzanne! Maybe you have hit a plateau? Possibly a change to the routine? You are doing fantastic! Keep it going!
Hi Lori! Of course keep the exercising going! Try those peppers!
Hi Kami! Thank you!
hi Tipper! Fantastic!
Hi Mike!I love it! On my lunch list…thank you!
Great info, Mark. And the upside to all of these foods, irrespective of their effects on metabolism, is that they’re just plain good for you. So, we might as well try them out, because even if they don’t accelerate our metabolism they offer plenty of alternative upside.
Foods that speed up your metabolism, love it! I always put a ton of those crushed red pepper spices on my pasta, wonder if that counts lol?
great list! i haven’t been drinking as much green tea as I normally do, not sure why? i’ll have to get on that
For me personally the water is and important one. I’ve heard that if the water is cold it speeds up your metabolism even more as your body first has to heat the water before it can use it. Does anyone know if there are any truth in it?
great list. i do remember reading about the hot peppers and it revving up your metabolism. i love hot and spicy foods.
This is great, it’s funny because I was just thinking about what foods would do this the other day! I need to drink more water I think, I didn’t realize water did that!
Great tips! I’m trying to change my diet as I eat too much meat..
Lets hear it for coffee!!!
Great list, Mark! It’s so great to read your no nonsense information! I’m a big fan of cinnamon for speeding up your metabolism. It’s a great little spice that helps your body metabolize sugars quickly which means your blood sugar stays “level” and you don’t have those pesky cravings! I put it in my oatmeal of the mornings but you can also add a stick of cinnamon to that delicious tea you mentioned or even a sprinkle in your morning coffee!
Have a great weekend, friend!!
Hey Mark, still waiting for my spicy taco!
Have a great weekend…
peace,
mike

Mark,
Enjoyed the post. Planted the peppers in the garden this week.
Coffee is my favorite!
Couldn’t do without it.
Hoping all is well with you and yours! Not like you not to have another post out!
I’ve been feeling so guilty about the one cup of caffeine I have everyday. Oh to find out the amazing truth!!!! I could never quit now. : ) Thanks for the GREAT list.
hi Mark. I hope all is well with you
We miss you!
Hey Mark-just wanted to stop by and say HELLO! And that I hope all is well with you and your family.
Hi Mark,
I just wanted to echo what was said above. I hope all is well with you and your family and that you come back soon.
Best
Dave
Hey Mark! I hope you and your family are doing okay. Hopefully you are on vacation or something!
Take care:-)
Just checking in to see how you are! Hope everything is alright!
Is everything ok? Miss you hope to hear from you soon.
Wow, great article! I knew about a lot of these foods already…but ginger and cumin are definitely a revelation for me. Now I just need to find some good recipes with these ingredients.
Great list, except for that green tea.
I remember reading somewhere (Sparkpeople, I think?) that pears and almonds are also good metabolism boosters. No idea if it’s true, but they’re both good for you so I regularly have them.
Wishing you a great weekend, Mark!
We’re growing some peppers in the Topsy Turvy. Things are going great thus far. I grew them just for this reason- so I could have more to put in my food and give my metabolism a boost.
I guess glazed donuts would not apply here?
uh this one is exactly what i need. i have until september to shed at least 10-15 pounds. thought about the ab diet since that’s really the only thing i’m working on.
anwyhoo, hope you’re okay
Hi! It’s been quite some time. I guess my metabolism is low as I don’t have a proper diet. Great tips and will take more of the recommended food to help myself.
Just checking in to see if everything is ok. You’re missed in the blogosphere!
Thanks for this great, healthful list. I’m a big fan of citrus fruits and whole grains….love cinnamon too!
I just came back…now it’s your turn!! “Cooooooooooommmmmme Baaahhhhhcck!” (said like Dory, in Finding Nemo.)
This is a great article. I have been looking for something to help educate my patients. I now have something to refer them to.
Thanks

Great post. You might like some posts on my blog here
Hey Mark, long time no visit –it’s been a long summer of lots to do not enough time.
Anyway, great list you have here. I think I got it covered – not so much on the spicy foods but I do like green tea. In fact, I get Yerba Mate from Aviva because it’s flavored with lemon myrtle or ambrosia, taste great hot or cold. Thanks for sharing.
As a former horseracing jockey during 23 years I never struggled with my weight by applying the following balanced food intake formula;
15% fats, 35% sugars, 50% proteins.
If your physical activity is low, don’t exceed 1200 calories a day, it it is high you can go up till 2200 calories a day always implementing the above formula.
Overweight will melt away week after week.
Hey, just found this article thanks to Stumble. Great list!
I just wanted to throw out that although green teas are great, oolong teas will actually be better for metabolism and digestion. An oolong is basically halfway between a green and a black tea. Green teas are lightly fermented, black teas are fully fermented and oolongs fall in between. Many also have a much more “accessible” flavor to those who have said they don’t like the taste of green tea!
